Intro

Tell us who you are and what kind of films/videos you create.

I am Darryl Miller and love being behind the camera, telling stories through the visual medium.

Your spark

What first got you into filmmaking or video production?

My first experiences in video production were through my high school video program and volunteering at the local public access cable station. Learned about filmmaking by watching films and experimenting with my friends on our own short films.

The craft

What’s one thing you focus on most when telling a story on screen?

My current focus is on creating an inviting atmosphere on set. Allowing the shooting environment to be comfortable, collaborative, a safe space to be vulnerable. Having the experience be rewarding for all involved has become one my biggest priorities.

A recent win

Tell us about a project you’re especially proud of.

I am always proud of the work I do with Flying House Media. I work as freelance Director of Photography and additional Camera Operator on some of their projects. I find it highly rewarding to help tell the stories of patients on their heroic journey managing their rare chronic disease. We become advocates for them and I am honored to earned their trust.

Behind the scenes

What’s one tool, trick, or habit that makes your workflow easier?

Patience is the key. Not allowing the stress of the day or the anxiety of others distract you from doing the job to the best of your ability.

Looking ahead

Where do you see the future of filmmaking heading in the next 2–3 years?

I think that we have to embrace AI as a tool. I also feel that there may be analog backlash to AI. So keeping an open mind, as always be ready to learn more, and to lead not by fear, but with curiosity.
